Cable TV is a staple part of many people’s lives as it brings us our daily news, sports, and entertainment.  But, in recent times, many of us have experienced a steady increase in the amount of money that it costs in order to retain even the most basic television plan.  Rather than continue carrying the burden of an ever-increasing cable TV bill, there are a variety of options to address this including cutting one’s cable or satellite television connection.  While cutting cable or satellite television isn’t for everyone, it is easier to do nowadays than one might think.  Through my personal experiences, I hope to explain the simple process by which you can also save money while retaining access to your desired news, sports, and entertainment.

Let’s begin back in the year 2006 when my family and I were still connected to satellite television.  Like many other households, we were paying $150 a month for a plan that included many channels and services that we were not utilizing.  2006 was also the year that Netflix began offering its now-famous streaming services as well as its DVD rental via mail program.

My family purchased a Roku box that, when connected to one’s internet, allows one to access one’s Netflix account via their television.  It is this basic set-up, in conjunction with Netflix easy to use, ad-free programming, which drove us to make the decision to cancel our satellite TV service.  Since then, I have paid only $11 a month for my Netflix subscription which provides me with access to more movies and TV series than I will ever be able to watch in a lifetime.

So, let’s do the math.

$150 a month for satellite tv which would total $1,800 a year

Netflix at $11 a month is $132 a year

$1,668 a year in savings

That is a savings of $16,680 over the last 10 years.

Hulu is an American service consisting of a joint venture with Walt Disney Company, 21st Century Fox, NBC Universal, and Turner Broadcasting System. It is primarily oriented towards television series, carrying current and past episodes of series from its owners’ respective television networks and other content partners.

Like Netflix, one can access Hulu through any wireless internet streaming device (i.e. iPhone, tablet, laptop etc.), smart TV, or through a Roku. A Hulu account ranges in cost from $7.99 to $21 a month depending on the chosen package.   With the ability to access the account via up to 6 devices at one time, some package options include basic plans, ad-free content, and access to premium television providers such as Showtime and HBO.  You pay month-to-month for these services and can cancel anytime without penalty for the cancellation.

Amazon Prime is a paid subscription service offered by Amazon.com that provides its members access to a variety of premium services that Amazon has available in its storefront.  These services include:

*  FREE 1-day shipping on orders in the United States

* Discounts on shipping for orders in the United States

* Access to on-demand streaming of movies, TV shows, and music included in the Amazon archives

These services and others can be accessed on any internet-supporting device that one can access the Amazon Storefront and associated Apps including iPhones, Desktops, Tablets, and iPads.  This subscription will cost you $119 a year with not only the option to automatically renew each year but to cancel at any time if one so chooses not to keep the service.
